The State of Storytelling 2026

As part of the Bakoena Royal Council’s five-year strategic plan, the preservation, promotion, and celebration of culture and heritage remain central to the work of Marena and traditional leadership. In advancing this important pillar, Bakoena Royal Council was represented by Morena Lerotholi Mopeli, Morena Peete Mopeli, Mofumahadi Manneheng Mopeli, Kgosatsana Manapo Mopeli, Morena Mohlakoana Mopeli and Mofumahadi Malefa Mopeli at the State of Storytelling event hosted in partnership with the South African Gallery of Legends and South African National Parks at Golden Gate Highlands National Park.

The programme included opening remarks by Morena Isaac Peete and closing reflections by Morena Lerotholi Mopeli. The gathering celebrated storytelling as a powerful way to preserve identity and pass cultural knowledge to younger generations, and was honoured by the presence of renowned cultural and legendary icons Dr Helen Sebidi and Dr Gcina Mhlophe.
